Earthworm Jim- soon to be on the PSN!!

As you are all aware, I've been totally immersed in the PSN these past few weeks- trying out demos, buying small games and generally giggling over the back catalogue of retro games. The release of FF VII alone made me giggle with glee for weeks on end. And now I feel the Cheshire Cat-esque grin on my face has no chance of subsiding with the promise of another great classic game, one which sits close to the top of my all time favourite games list-

EARTHWORM JIM

I found this nugget of info on another gaming site-
Gameloft has announced it will be delivering the classic platformer Earthworm Jim to digital distribution platforms and mobile phones. Originally released on 16-bit systems back in 1994, Earthworm Jim stars the titular invertebrate who wears a super suit which grants him the power to fight the evil forces of Queen Slug-for-a-Butt. It's not clear, yet, whether this is an all-new game or a straight port of the original. As of this writing, Gameloft could not be reached for clarification.

"The game, with its humorous and edgy style, is a great fit for today's gamer who craves a fully immersive experience that is fun and easily accessible," said Gonzague de Vallois, senior vice president, Gameloft.

"Earthworm Jim resonates with millions of people worldwide and we are excited to have one of the best developers in the industry create this game for a new audience," said Herve Caen, CEO, Interplay.

Interestingly, SEGA announced last week that the original Earthworm Jim is a candidate for the next SEGA Classics release on Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) and PlayStation Network.

Can you say "GROOVY!"

Top 10 July PSN Games

No real surprise to see Battlefield 1943 at the top for July after hearing that it broke records for both XBLA and PSN for day one and week one sells.

Will August's top 10 PSN games see Fat Princess take the number one spot or will we see Battlefield 1943 hold on, and if Trine does end up releasing sometime in August it to could take the top spot.

Fat Princess News

The Sun have a piece on their site showing pictures of fattened up celebrities including Posh spice, Cheryl Cole, Naomi Campbell, Keira Knightley and indie babe Amy Winehouse.

Their transformations mark the release of a new PlayStation game called Fat Princess. It pits two hordes of players against each other in a comic medieval battle royale. We can just imagine these girls going head-to-head...or should that be gut-to-gut?

Sony have yet to announce a fixed release date since the game was pushed back from its original date, but at the bottom of the post The Sun have written the following in bold. Fat Princess is available for download from the PlayStation Network this August.

TurboGrafx PC Games Coming to PSN

From today the PSN store in Japan will be updated with PC engine games including Bomberman '94, New Adventure Island (Takahashi Meijin no Shin Boukenjima), Sengoku Mahjong, and Devil Crush are available starting today, priced at the standard Game Archives going price of ¥600. The games are playable on both PlayStation 3 and PSP.

Sony also i have said to expect more PC engine games in the future, and maybe we will see more classic games from other platforms such as Genesis and NeoGeo.

No word on if we will see this kind of service for U.S and Europe but i would expect we will see it at some point in the future. Japan seems to get most things first then over time they come to other regions, maybe Sony are trying out this service first in Japan to see if there is a demand over here.

The Future Of Trading In Games

The future of retail and online games stores seems bleak at the moment due to the ever change ways of buying our games, for the PC you have services like Steam that seem very popular where you pay a subscription to play what ever games you want when you want but never actually own them, then you have Xbox live, PSN and Wii shop channel for your home consoles in which you can download games, DLC, demos and trailers. In the future i'm sure these services will grow and become even more popular meaning we will buy more downloadable games instead of buying games from stores, also other services such as OnLive our on the way and may change the way we play games using the Internet and a monthly subscription on any TV or PC, this may mean by the time the next generation of home consoles releases they may be alot different from what we have now such as a download only like the PSPGO.

There are three possibilities

Disc and download
Download only
Subscription based

The problems with disc's and download's are that they can be pirated over time but subscribution based is alot better due to you never downloading the full game which makes it less likely to be pirated. My opinion is we may see download only consoles next generation, This helps the developers and publishers save money from not producing disc's, manuals, and case's. The other thing this helps the publishers do is sell more of there games instead of losing money from people buying traded in games.

What i would like to see if consoles become download only is the ability to sell the games we download via PSN store. The way this could work is when you go to the PSN store to buy a game you receive a redeem code which you then redeem and then download and play then when you want to sell/trade the game you delete the game from your hard drive and then go on to the PSN store and list the item and redeem code on a section just for trading in games and when it sells you get a certain percentage, Sony gets a percentage and the publisher gets a percentage.

Example
Battlefield 1943 cost's £9.99 to buy new you then play and then Sell on the PSN store for £9.99 you then receive something like 25%, Sony receives 25% and the publisher receives 50%

If this could be done in some kind of way i think this would help people who like buying disc's from shops as they will be able to still sell there games to buy others and would make it cheaper then buying the disc version's as a download only service is cheaper then a disc service, which means games that are £39.99 in shops now could sell for around £25-£30. This could be done if redeem codes are used and a system that changes the code once listed on the PSN store to stop you from redownloading the game again.

As for retail stores they could also sell either PSN cards or the games using redeem codes for people who don't have there console hooked up to the Internet or for when you want to buy a game for someone else for birthdays or Christmas's

Whatever happens when the next generation comes around I'm sure downloadable content will be a huge part of how games are sold.
